Beyond Technical Expertise: How Business Judgement and Human Skills Build Future Leaders

Q: 1. How does Kirloskar Institute of Management prepare students for leadership roles?

Kirloskar Institute of Management (KIM) combines management education with industry exposure and practical learning. Case discussions, live projects and industry interactions help students develop business judgement, analytical thinking and people-management skills.

Q: 2. Why are business judgement and human skills important for KIM students?

Business judgement helps management students assess business challenges and make informed decisions. Communication, empathy and teamwork help them work with people and put those decisions into practice.

Q: 3. What skills should management students develop to become future business leaders?

Management students should develop strategic thinking, financial awareness, critical thinking, data literacy, emotional intelligence and communication skills. These capabilities help them understand business priorities, manage uncertainty and lead teams.

Q: 4. How does industry exposure help KIM students develop business acumen?

Industry exposure helps students connect management concepts with workplace challenges. Live projects and interactions with industry professionals can help them understand business operations, evaluate trade-offs and consider the impact of their decisions.

Q: 5. How can KIM develop students' leadership skills beyond classroom learning?

KIM can strengthen leadership development through case-based discussions, interdisciplinary projects, peer feedback and practical assignments. These activities encourage students to question assumptions, communicate their reasoning and take responsibility for decisions.

Technical expertise may open the door, but it rarely determines who is trusted to lead.

As Director of Kirloskar Institute of Management, drawing on years of work in human resources and behavioral psychology, I have heard recruiters describe what technically strong candidates lack and watched graduates discover those gaps during their first eighteen months at work.

Whilst a candidate may be shortlisted for his qualification, his business judgement and human skills decide whether he can be trusted with a team, a budget, or a consequential strategic decision.

The landscape is shifting rapidly. The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects that 39 per cent of workers’ core skills will need to change by 2030. The India Skills Report 2026 notes that national employability stands at 56.35 per cent, up from 46.2 per cent in 2022.

This signals progress, but the remaining gap shows how many candidates still fall short of employers’ expectations.

Future-ready leaders need three capabilities working in tandem: the analytical discipline to think clearly, the empathy to lead people, and the commercial judgement to act decisively in the organization’s best interests.

Anatomy of Business Judgement

Business judgement is the ability to make sound, strategic decisions based on incomplete information and by weighing numbers, people, and context together. When executives say a manager has a “feel for the business,” they are recognizing this synthesis. Business acumen and leadership are inseparable.

Acumen provides an understanding of how an organization earns revenue, manages expenses, competes, and carries risk. Judgement dictates what to do with that understanding, when data is messy and the deadline is pressing.

Through a behavioural lens, judgement is a discipline of self-awareness. Daniel Kahneman’s research showed how readily people swap a quick, intuitive impression for a careful assessment, often feeling confident while doing so. Leaders who build judgement learn to notice this swap, slow down, and ask what they might be missing.

Judgement is not a gift some people are born with. It is built when experience meets reflection: making a call, watching what happens, and honestly asking why.

Premium on Human Skills

As technology absorbs routine analysis, distinctly human capabilities command a premium. In the WEF report, employers ranked analytical thinking highest, with roughly 69% calling it essential. Resilience, flexibility, and agility followed at 67 per cent, and leadership and social influence at 61%. Over 50% employers named empathy, active listening, motivation and self-awareness as core skills.

Human skills in the age of AI are not a garnish on the technical main course but sit inside the top ten skills given above.

The India Skills Report 2026 adds a telling detail: more than 90 per cent of Indian employees have already begun working with generative AI tools. When everyone has access to the same tools, the differentiator is how well a leader communicates, builds trust and gets capable people to drive in one direction.

In my years in HR, I rarely saw a project fail for want of software. I saw many fail because two talented people stopped talking to each other. Emotional intelligence in leadership and interpersonal skills in the workplace is not soft. They are what make execution possible.

Critical Thinking as a Decision-Making Anchor

Analytical thinking tops the WEF list for a reason. Critical thinking and decision-making skills are not about being skeptical for its own sake, they are structured curiosity

Four habits make the difference:

Define the real problem before solving it
Separate evidence from opinion
Argue the opposite case honestly, and
Review the decision once the outcome is known.

Consider an illustrative case:

A regional sales head is offered a large order from a customer with a patchy payment record. The spreadsheet says yes.

Critical thinking asks further questions. What will delayed payment cost our cash flow? What does this customer’s pressure tell us about their own business? How will the team read our decision?

The strongest leaders hold the numbers, the risks and the people in the same frame, and can explain their reasoning without defensiveness.

That is business judgement at work.

The T-Shaped Professional

None of this argues against deep technical expertise. A finance manager who cannot read a balance sheet, or an operations director who does not understand production, loses credibility almost immediately. What matters is sequence and balance.

Technical skill earns a seat at the table, business skill dictates what the table is deciding, and human skill ensures the decision is implemented.

This strengthens the case for T-shaped professionals, who combine deep knowledge in one discipline with breadth across finance, operations, data, and human resources.

Back to Basics?

This principle applies directly to management education: technology should extend human judgement, not replace the effort through which it develops. Digitally advanced systems are recalibrating accordingly.

Sweden has committed hundreds of millions of kronor to reintroduce printed textbooks and restore handwriting practice, citing declining basic skills, and frames this as a recalibration rather than a reversal. Nearly one in four countries now restrict smartphones in schools. UNESCO’s 2023 monitoring report cautioned that robust evidence of technology’s educational value remains scarce.

The lesson is not to abandon technology but to use it deliberately- Fo example, using paper-pen where we want slow thinking, an original voice and honest assessment and screens where we want to extend our learning.

Core Skills for Future Leaders

Taken together, the evidence points to a practical leadership profile rather than a contest between technical and human capability. If I had to distil that profile for future leaders, I would focus on six skills that connect sound analysis, commercial awareness and the ability to lead people.

Strategic Thinking and Decision-Making Under Uncertainty

Forecasts will often be wrong, so leaders must rely on scenario planning. They ask what must be true for a plan to succeed and stay composed when answers are unclear. Psychologists call this tolerance for ambiguity.

Financial and Commercial Awareness

Every manager is a business manager. Leaders must read a profit and loss statement, understand cash flow and unit economics, and show how their team’s output affects the bottom line and the customer experience.

Data Literacy and AI-Informed Decision-Making

AI is excellent at making recommendations, but the human leader remains accountable for the outcome. That means interrogating where data came from, identifying missing context, and resisting automation bias-the tendency to trust a confident machine over our own doubts.

Emotional Intelligence and Empathy

Daniel Goleman’s model of self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy turns a capable manager into a trusted one. Amy Edmondson’s research on psychological safety shows that when people feel safe to raise questions, admit mistakes, and challenge assumptions, teams detect problems earlier and learn from them.

Communication, Influence, and Storytelling

A number may persuade the logical mind, but a well-crafted story persuades the lasting memory. Exerting influence without formal authority is the central daily work of the modern leader.

Coaching, Mentoring, and Developing People

A manager’s people-management capability is most visible in how well they grow the talent around them. The WEF lists talent management among the fastest-rising skills because the best leaders multiply capability rather than hoard knowledge.

These skills are not learnt from books alone. They call for a different approach to management learning.

For those of us in management education, the task is to stop treating these capabilities as separate courses and build them into every classroom conversation, case and project.

Real leaders never get to treat numbers and people as different subjects, and neither should students. In practice, this means four things:

Integrated cases. Every case should end with three questions: what the numbers say, who will be affected, and what would make us wrong.
Visible reasoning. Students record their decision and their confidence in it before each discussion and revisit it afterwards. These entries build into a decision journal graded on the quality of reflection, alongside oral defences of how they decided.
Balanced use of AI. Some assignments to leverage AI and others to be approached in the traditional way to protect slow, original thinking.
Assessed human skills. Live projects are assessed partly through communication and peer feedback, while peer-coaching pairs make each student accountable for a classmate’s development.

The most effective leaders will combine head, heart, and business sense. The head provides the clarity to see a problem as it is. The heart supplies the empathy and courage to bring teams along. Business sense keeps both anchored by focusing on what the organization needs to survive and thrive.

As a constituent institution of the Kirloskar Group, Kirloskar Institute of Management, Pune, is uniquely positioned to connect students and faculty with industry experts and practitioners through a range of engagements both inside and beyond the classroom. An on-site Industry 4.0 lab builds technological awareness, while industry-driven live projects give students first-hand insight into the complexities of successful management and foster both technical and personal growth.

The caveat is “Educator, heal thyself” (adapted from “Physician, heal thyself,” Luke 4:23). This is a crucial step, because students learn more from what faculty model than from what they teach. Faculty need to admit uncertainty, invite challenge, act visibly on student feedback, co-teach across disciplines, and refresh their own industry and AI knowledge.

The classroom should be the first place students see head, heart and business sense working together.

The leaders who matter in the coming decades will not be those with the most knowledge. They will be those who turn knowledge into sound decisions and bring others along with them.
